Travels with Auntie M: eagle

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 250 acre cemetery was established in 1848. It was one of Boston’s first parks consisting of rugged hills, scenic vistas, winding paths, pine forests, grassy areas and an ornamental lake. I only had about a hour and failed at my desire to find the grave site of E. E. Cummings. Here’s what I did find:

John Reece invented and patented the ‘Button Hole Sewing Machine’ which revolutionized hand sewing and standardized the size of buttonholes. He was killed trying to save an employee from danger of being crushed by a moving elevator.

Eugene O’Neill, playwright and Nobel laureate in Literature:

2^nd Lieutenant Kitchell Snow landed the first aircraft at a small runway that would later become Logan International Airport, he died in a plane crash at the age of 24.

One of my students recommended several nearby historic sites I should visit. The first was Worms, in 1521, Martin Luther made a statement here that caused the Holy Roman Emperor to declare him an outlaw and the Pope to excommunicate him…thus, the Protestant Reformation was born. Here’s some of the sights of Worms:

One of the oldest towns in Germany, settled by the Celts and later in 14 BC the Romans arrived. This is the Cathedral of St. Peter, parts of it dates back to 1018:

I keep seeing chicken wind vanes…so I had to do some research. In the ninth century, Pope Nicholas decreed that a rooster would be displayed from every church steeple as a weather vane. They were to remind people of Peter’s three denials of Christ before the cock crowed.
