Proteas - 01 JAN 2020

While watching the Rose Parade on television, I learned an interesting fact: Proteas are considered the oldest flowering plant, dating back over 300 million years.

Doing some additional research, I learned: Proteas occur naturally in the Southern Hemisphere. Believed to have originated on the super-continent of Gondawana. When the continent split, they were spread across different continents: Australia, New Zealand, and South America.
When I visited Maui in 1986, I took a tour of a Protea farm, here are some images from that Hawaiian trip:
Pincushion Protea
They are named after Proteus, the shape-shifter son of Poseidon.
 With over 1500 species, they come in different shapes and sizes (from trees to shrubs).
