Hauptfriedhof (Main Cemetery) Kaiserslautern, Germany – 14 MAR 2011

Although this cemetery dates back to 1873, the majority of the graves are less than fifty years old. Twenty years ago several large sections of the cemetery were recycled. In Germany it is common practice to recycle graves as you do not own the plot, only rent it for 20 years. If, after 20 years there are no remaining relatives willing to pay a new rental fee…out goes the monument and in comes new bodies. Muslim and Jewish cemeteries are exception to this rule due to religious reasons, and the graves of famous Germans are kept untouched for posterity. (Rest safe Red Baron.)
When leaving town, I spotted two of these strange concret Paul Bunyan size bullet shaped structures. I was told they are left over from the war, but I have no idea purpose they served.
